Nursing moms sometimes feel they are making less milk than they need. Try not to worry. The amount will change, especially as your body and your schedule changes. Your body adjusts to the amount of milk your baby needs. Here are a few things to help increase your milk supply:
The rule of breastfeeding is supply and demand. That means that as more milk goes out, more milk comes in. Try to nurse more often—every 2 hours during the day and 1-2 times at night, if possible.
Do a Daily “Power Pump”
If you use a breast pump, set aside time each day or night for “power pumping.” The idea is that you pump, then rest, then pump again. The amount of time you actually pump should equal the amount of time you regularly spend in a breastfeeding or pumping session. For example: If you usually pump for 15 minutes you would pump for 5 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes, pump again for 5 minutes, rest again, and pump again for 5 minutes. This can train your body to produce more milk. You should see results after 2 or 3 days.
Ask About Drugs
Some women take prescription medications to boost their supply. Talk with your provider if you feel this is needed.
