Life as a new mom can be stressful. It’s important to find ways to care for yourself while caring for your baby. If you feel overwhelmed, here are a few things you can try:
Get More Sleep
An extra hour of sleep might seem hard to find, but when you can find it, take it! Nap when the baby does, and, if you can, share nighttime duties with a partner.
Focus on Eating Well
Good nutrition can support your body and your brain even when your energy runs low. Reach for whole grains and lean proteins, fruits, and low-fat dairy. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids—especially if you’re breastfeeding. (A good baseline is a glass of water every time you feed.)
Exercise
Moving your body — even just a short, brisk walk — is a great way to calm your mind. Try to fit in a half hour, most days of the week. You’ll build strong muscles and improve your sleep at the same time.
Ask for Help
If you find yourself struggling, don’t be afraid to lean on your partner or to reach out to close friends and family. Overwhelming stress could be the sign of something more serious going on. It’s a good idea to touch base with your provider.
