What’s Normal, What’s Not
For the first few days and even weeks after your baby is born, you may not feel like yourself. And no matter how much you love your child, there may be times when you don’t feel happy. Adjusting to the big change in your life, shifting hormone levels, and lack of sleep all play in to what is commonly known as the baby blues. Here’s what you may experience:
- Feelings of sadness
- Anxiety
- Crying for “no reason”
- Changes in eating habits
- Changes in sleep
Most of these symptoms should resolve themselves in a few weeks without treatment.
Call your provider immediately if you experience thoughts of hurting yourself or hurting the baby. If you find that you are still feeling some of these symptoms after a few weeks, it could be a sign of postpartum depression. Talk with your provider about the symptoms you are having. Know that postpartum depression is common.
